:Don't forget to give expert mode a go...
Expert mode was introduced in version 1.7 as a more challenging way to play The Blockheads.

Starting
Getting Started
Worlds enter expert mode while they're being created. Such worlds are a form of custom world that imposes a number of alterations, only some of which can be changed.

Expert mode worlds may be used to host multiplayer sessions normally.

Conditions
When playing a world in expert mode, harvesting produces less resources (including products from trees and plants) and crafting tends to require more, although this is partially compensated by an increase in the abundance of deposits of all kinds. Gold chests do not spawn under beaches, only in caves, and are less common. And, as is normal with custom worlds, the portal chest is unavailable.

The situation is complicated due to the default of blockheads spawning with no items, and by blocking ready access to meditation and trade portals.

Some of the changes can be adjusted using custom rules, such as teleportation requiring a diamond portal, meditation being blocked, attacks and hunger doubled in effect, and tools wearing out at half the rate (unless misused, including non-weapons being used to attack).

Additional differences from normal mode are also present:

* Crafting trade portals is only possible in a diamond portal
* If a blockhead foolishly chops down a tree at the bottom, then he/she receives one wood (whereas in normal mode, an abundance of wood blocks and sticks drop.

Crafting Progression
In addition to significant changes in the recipes for crafting, expert mode imposes a clear progression through the crafting surfaces by adding levels between every item on a workbench. Further restriction exists in that a trade portal cannot be crafted without a diamond portal and many level-ups (some of them new) on all crafting surfaces require a gem as an ingredient. The result can be seen in the following list:
* Level 1: make a campfire, use it to craft an ember and a torch to level up
* Level 2: make a tool bench, make tools to harvest flint and flax to level up
* Level 3: make a craft bench, use it to craft a basket to level up (along with wood)
* Level 4: make a woodwork bench, use it to craft a ladder to level up (along with flax and an amethyst)
* Level 5: make a tailor's bench, use it to craft linen to level up (along with an amethyst)
* Level 6: make a kiln, use it to craft charcoal to level up (along with copper ore, tin ore, and an amethyst)
* Level 7: make a furnace, use it to craft bronze ingots to level up (along with an amethyst)
* Level 8: make a press, use it to craft oil, carbon black, and marble white to level up (along with an amethyst)
* Level 9: make a compost bin, use it to craft compost to level up (along with a sapphire)
* Level 10: unlock armor bench, use tin ingots and a sapphire to level up
* Level 11: unlock easel, use iron ingots and a sapphire to level up
* Level 12: make a builder's bench, use it to craft a red marble column and a lapis lazuli column to level up (along with a sapphire)
* Level 13: make a metalwork bench, use it to craft a cage to level up (along with a sapphire)
* Level 14: make a pizza oven, use it to craft a pizza to level up (along with an emerald)
* Level 15: make a train yard, use it to craft a rail and a train wheel to level up (along with an emerald)
* Level 16: make a mixing bench, use it to craft paint stripper to level up (along with an emerald)
* Level 17: unlock dye bench, use a steam engine and emerald to level up
* Level 18: unlock steam generator, use copper wire and an emerald to level up
* Level 19: unlock electric kiln, use red bricks and black glass and a ruby to level up
* Level 20: make an electric furnace, use it to craft titanium and platinum ingots to level up (along with a ruby)
* Level 21: make an electric press, use it to craft rainbow essence to level up (along with a ruby)
* Level 22: make an electric stove, use it to craft rainbow cake to level up (along with a ruby)
* Level 23: make an electric metalwork bench, use it to craft silicon wafers to level up (along with an electric motor and a ruby)
* Level 24: unlock flywheel, use a steel block, buckets of water, and a diamond to level up
* Level 25: unlock electric sluice, use a steel block, dodo eggs, and a diamond to level up
* Level 26: unlock egg extractor, use silicon wafers, copper wire, and a diamond to level up
* Level 27: unlock solar panel, use oil, coal, and a diamond to level up
* Level 28: make a refinery, use it to make carbon fiber sheets to level up (along with gold coins and a diamond)
* Level 29: unlock shop

The increased number of gems needed for portal upgrades and the need for gems for upgrading other crafting surfaces gives the player some strategic planning to consider.
A resource egg is a special dodo egg that comes in 32 different variants.

Where Found
Each type of egg is laid by the respective dodo breed or one that is a tier lower or higher.

Appearance
They look like dodo eggs, except the texture resembles that of the respective resource.

Crafting
All resource eggs can be processed through an egg extractor, yielding two of the respective resource.

Uses
If left alone on the ground, a resource egg will hatch into the appropriate dodo breed within a couple of days. Resource eggs in a blockhead's inventory, in a container, or dropped on the ground as a loose item will not hatch. If placed, they will hatch, even indoors or underground. It is possible to do dodo breed farming this way.

To reach a higher tier, a blockhead needs to have two same-type dodos with each other (for example, having two iron dodos can produce a gold egg). Otherwise, they can only lay a respective dodo breed or one that is a tier lower (for example, having one titanium dodo can produce either a titanium egg or gold egg).

Unlike Dodo Eggs, resource dodos drop their respective resource once upon their death and never drop dodo feathers and dodo eggs. Baby resource dodos do not drop anything upon their death.

If a player wants to farm resource eggs, it is recommended to tame the dodos to prevent them from dying. Laying an egg lowers the dodo's hunger.

Strategies
In Expert Mode, resource eggs are very useful, especially during early-middle game. For example, in the 13th upgrade of the workbench, it requires 1 red marble column+1 lapis lazuli column+1 sapphire, so a player needs to obtain the eggs in order: dodo egg --> stone egg --> limestone egg --> marble egg --> red marble egg --> lapis lazuli egg. This is useful if a player did not have protective gear to find lapis lazuli and red marble blocks due to the presence of scorpions and drop bears.

A player can also obtain titanium and platinum ores without needing to mine, so using resource eggs are also helpful to obtain them.

Trivia
* Resource eggs were introduced in version 1.7.

Dodos are passive creatures found throughout a blockhead's world. They are a source of several items used as food as well as items that are used in the crafting process. A dodo's preferred food is apples.

Appearance
Dodos are short, flightless birds. Their bodies are red with a splash of purple towards the back. They have blue heads and feet, as well as long beaks shading from light near the head to black at the tip. Baby dodos were added in the version 1.7 update.

Other breeds of dodos are recognizable by the colors and patterns on their undersides and backsides.

Where Found
Dodos randomly appear near apple trees or hatch as babies from placed dodo eggs or resource eggs and can be found in nearly all temperate biome regions, especially in areas with an abundance of apple trees.

Farming
It is possible to deliberately generate dodos in a selected area by planting apple trees or placing eggs there.

Behavior
Dodo are typically solitary animals but may have presocial behavior when other dodo birds are in the area. They can be found walking or pecking the ground. Like most creatures, they cannot climb a two-block change in height. They occasionally squawk when a blockhead is in the vicinity and when provoked or attacked will attempt to flee from a blockhead.

Tamed dodos may follow a blockhead. This effect may be enhanced if the blockhead has apples in their inventory.

There is no noticeable difference in behavior between the different breeds of dodo.

Hunger
Beginning in version 1.7, dodos have a hunger bar that steadily decreases. Laying an egg will sharply reduce a dodo's hunger bar. It is restored a large amount when the dodo eats an apple, either by moving over one that is loose on the ground, passing a Feeder Chest that contains an apple, or having a blockhead feed them one. A tamed dodo's hunger bar may be viewed by tapping on it and selecting the button with its name, but will also be visible over a tamed dodo that is sufficiently hungry.

If a dodo's hunger bar runs low enough, it will squawk at least three times before dying.

Taming
Pet
Introduced in version 1.7, dodos are tamed by feeding them three apples; both baby and adult dodos may be tamed, although they will tend to be grown before becoming fully tamed. A dodo will only accept being fed when its hunger bar has reduced (which is not visible for untamed dodos). Once tamed, a dodo will be assigned a random name that will appear over it. It can then be tapped on to show a menu with the type of dodo breed and three buttons: Set Free, Ride, and the dodo's name.

Tapping "Set Free" will make the dodo no longer tamed, prompting it to squawk and jump. It usually can be re-tamed by feeding it at least once.

Tapping "Ride" will cause the active blockhead to climb up on the selected dodo and ride it. See Riding (below).

Tapping the dodo's name button will call up a window displaying the dodo's health and hunger bars as well as the dodo's name. The dodo can be renamed by tapping on the pencil button to the right of the dodo's name.

Health
Creature Hit Chart
A dodo is not a hardy creature, usually falling within a few hits from a particular weapon or tool. Whether dying on its own or killed, a dying dodo makes a distinctive "squawk" sound and drops items. A tamed dodo's health bar may be viewed by tapping on it and selecting the button with its name.

Untamed dodos will die from old age and hunger. This may happen sooner if no living apple trees are nearby.

Dodos are not affected by heat or cold, but can drown if submerged in water.

Uses
Dodos are a source of five things:

* Travel - Beginning in version 1.7, tapping an adult tamed (named) dodo will allow a blockhead to mount the dodo and ride it.
* Dodo Eggs - Randomly dropped by a dodo when provoked, frightened, or at random intervals.
* Resource Eggs - Sometimes dropped instead of a regular dodo egg. Each type stacks separately. There appear to be 32 different resource egg types. These never drop dodo meat and feathers, unlike Dodo Eggs.
* Dodo Meat - Randomly dropped by a dodo when it dies.
* Dodo Feathers - Randomly dropped by a dodo when it dies.

When killed, a dodo will drop one piece of meat and up to one feather. (Prior to version 1.7, they'd tend to drop more feathers.)

Breeding
Breeding
Added in version 1.7, dodos can develop new breeds through the eggs they lay. The breed hatched will depend on the egg used. Breeds are identifiable by the color and pattern of their undersides and backsides. A normal dodo egg will hatch a basic dodo. A resource egg will hatch a dodo breed of that resource. The breeds include:
* Dodos (basic dodo) may lay dirt, wood, or stone resource eggs.
* Dirt dodos may lay clay, compost, and flint resource eggs.
* Stone dodos may lay limestone, copper, amethyst, and gravel resource eggs.
Based on the egg extractor's menu, there are a total of 33 possible dodo breeds (including basic).

Trivia
* Dodo are based on a real bird (raphus cucullatus) of the same name that was discovered on an island off of Africa and went extinct in the 17th century.
* All dodo sounds were actually produced from majicDave's chickens.
