The Blockheads 2 is the planned sequel to The Blockheads, currently in development by David Frampton.[1] It is a complete remake of the original game, written in C++ using the Katipo engine and will be cross-platform (the list of platforms is not final but is confirmed to include Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android). It is planned to be released, tentatively, in early 2027.[2]

Development

The Blockheads 2 began development around August of 2026.[1] It was announced on 9 September 2026 in the Sapiens Discord server, and the next day on theblockheads.net.[1][3]

An AMA was held on r/blockheads on 14 September 2026.[4]

Differences

The Blockheads 2 is meant to be a mostly-faithful remake of the original game, but will have several major differences:

  • The Blockheads 2 is cross-platform, planned to be released on at least Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.[1]
  • The game will no longer be free, planned to cost around 5 USD on release. However, in-app purchases (Time Crystals, Double Time) will be removed.[1][5]
  • The Blockheads 2 will not have official cloud hosting. Instead, the katipo engine uses a "tracker" system to allow user-hosted servers to be discoverable in-game.[2][6][7]
  • Crafting times will be much faster.[6]
  • Authentication will be decentralized using a public key system, which will allow you to play multiplayer from the same account on multiple devices.[2]
  • Multiplayer will be server-authoritative, which makes cheating via client mods (which was quite rampant in the original game) much more difficult.[6]
  • Time crystals will still be in the game, but will be per-world (no longer obtainable via in-app purchase) and generated much more frequently in more places. The amount of time crystals used in crafting/warping blockheads will be decreased.[8][9]
  • Keyboard and controller support will be added.[9]
  • Blockheads will be able to have more expressive gender identities than the Male/Female binary used in the original game.[10]

New Features

  • Alongside the classic and HD texture packs from the original game, The Blockheads 2 will have a new texture pack featuring new lighting, shaders, and shadows.[6][9]
  • There will be basic support for modding on release, which will be more fleshed out in future updates. Localization will also be possible via modding.[2]
  • Many new automation features (pipes, conveyor belts, auto-farms) are planned.[11]
  • Many new mobs and plants are planned.[11]
  • More late-game challenges are planned.[12]
  • New biomes and weather events are planned.[13]
  • The ability to travel to outer space is planned.[10]
  • Larger worlds will be supported compared to the original.[14]
